Homeless Issue #104

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors. This move to help finance a shelter is an answer to many of my prayers. It initiates a need to officially organize the Nomadic Shelter under one organization. And will require accurate record keeping of those in the shelters. In the past, I found that the “official” homeless count by the County did not match with what I saw while on the streets and working in the shelters.  The registration of a homeless person requirements are a bit lengithly and involved, and are difficult for some of the homeless population to answer because of their short attention span. I had difficulty when conducting the U. S. Census, and past count census of the homeless population in El Dorado county. I pray the county requirements takes into account the population they will be addressing, and that populations abilities and their attention span to answer questions.

Officially:

HangTown Haven serves as the fiduciary agent for Nomadic Shelter Program .  The Shelter, as you know is a informal entity.  When concern about the fact that the NS had no legal status was raised perhaps a couple of years ago, the NS asked if HTH would serve as its fiduciary agent and HTH agreed.

We are sure into winter and I want to thank those BIG TIME clothing donors who came through BIG TIME with “Giving Trees,” at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, “Special Jeans Collections” (they collected over 65 jeans in the sizes we are in need of), at Light of the Hills Lutheran Church, and in the case of  Rolling Hills CC, an every two- week donation throughout the year, for JSS to distributes to our homeless population. MAN did they fill the bins in our storage unit! Our storage unit is a joint collaboration with Community Haven (HangTown Haven Inc.), Only Kindness Inc., and Job’s Shelters of the Sierra, which is in a house, housing homeless women.
Many others of you donate throughout the year, and you also are thanked and blessed.

Foothill UMC is the central collecting site for all donations. I pick up from them on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. Also every Sunday morning after our church service.

Tuesday nights are now covered. A group from Faith Episcopal Church headed up by Liza Reed will be hosting the shelter at Cold Springs CC on Tuesday nights. This is a great example of all of us working together. Some might call it ecumenical, partnership, but it boils down to all of us doing what our God asks of us together.

Placerville is replacing the chief of police who, it had been reported, was harassing the homeless population of the City of Placerville. I pray they choose a new chief that has some empathy for those of our citizens who have the very least.
